Death and Carrot Sticks

Halloween. A time for little ones to dress up as their favourite super hero or princess, frighten their friend’s parents and eat loads of sweets.

But the roots of Halloween lie in the Celtic belief that on the eve of October 31st, the end of their harvest, the dead return to earth to ruin their crops and possess the living. So to stop these unruly demons they dressed up in animal skins to confuse them.

Senior sound designer Chris Turner reveals what goes into making a truly immersive ad.

“Far too many ads I hear on commercial radio are undermining the astonishing power of the medium. It’s sad that I feel part of a minority that truly loves the power of radio advertising, so please allow me to evangelise.”

How to Listen

When was the last time you heard your alarm clock? Was it this morning as your phone sprung to life shouting that a new day had dawned? Or, perhaps it was at the weekend as you attempted to bake Yorkshire puds, the sharp short beeps keeping you from burning the edges to a crisp yet again?

So, now I’ll rephrase the question, when was the last time you listened to it?

Music Versus Sound Design - blog- Audio Engineer

Music vs Sound Design

A dedicated musician and sound designer collaborating closely will always produce the best work”

In recent years technology has bridged the gap between two very separate audio skills – music and sound design. As technology has evolved, composers and sound designers now find themselves using the same tools in the production of their craft and in many ways the two disciplines have converged; as has the vocabulary both use to describe sonic events.

Sound Sells

Ambisonics

Ambi-WHAT?

Put simply, it means full-sphere surround sound. That is, total 3D sound from above, below, in front and behind. It’s the truest, most realistic sound format in existence. NOTHING you’ve ever heard before compares. If you’d like a demonstration, contact us today. We’ll be happy to show you (all!) around.

A Day In The Life Of Binaural Bert

Bert or KU100 was created by Georg Neumann.

What can Bert do?

Well he’s actually rather clever as he was designed to record binaural sound in 3D – the same way we hear. It’s down to the way the sound is shaped by his head size, weight, pinnae, ear canals, etc. before it reaches the actual microphones buried deep in his head.

When you listen to a recording that Bert has made, it’ll feel very much like you were there with him. His work is best listened to on headphones (which these days isn’t the issue it once was) but you’ll be pleased to know his stereo work played on ordinary speakers sounds great too.

Check out what he sounds like in this video:
